2005/2006 Leading Edge Student Design Competition

The Leading Edge Student Design Competition seeks to support and enhance the study of
sustainable and energy-efficient building practices in Architectural Education. Now in our 13th
year, we invite students and instructors of Architecture and Design to use the competition as a
framework to explore the use of new materials and strategies for building, and the integration of
aesthetics and technology for high-performing, cutting edge architecture.

The first place entry in Challenge 1 and Challenge 2 will each receive $3,000. The second
place entry for each challenge will receive $2,000. In addition, the jury may award a number of
Certificates of Merit to projects that show outstanding effort in specific areas. The school,
college or university will receive $1,500 for sponsoring the first-place entry and $1,000 for
sponsoring the second-place entry. The competition reserves the right not to award first- or
second-place awards if no entry is deemed worthy by the jury.

Photo Life – Showtime

This is an opportunity for everyone to take up the challenge and exercise their creative spirit, and at the same time run the chance of being published in Photo Life. Each participant can submit up to five (5) pictures per theme. The first place winner per issue is awarded $100.

1st Annual Wetpixel.com and DivePhotoGuide.com

Wetpixel.com and DivePhotoGuide.com have teamed up to celebrate the beauty and delicacy of the marine environment by developing the first instance of a new, annual, international underwater photography competition. For this inaugural event, only digital entries will be accepted.

Photographers will compete in six categories to win more than $25,000 in prizes, including premium dive travel, underwater photography equipment, and more! Dive packages in the prize list include trips to some of the top photo destinations in the world: the Solomon Islands, Lembeh Strait, Raja Ampat, Komodo, the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and the Bahamas! Other prizes include HID lighting systems, camera housings, and other valuable items (see complete prize list below). 15% of entry proceeds will be donated to marine conservation efforts.

Winners will be announced on stage at the 2006 Our World-Underwater festival in Chicago, Illinois (February 24-26, 2006). The submission deadline is February 3, 2006.

International House of Japan Essay Contest

Theme: In Search of Coexistence for Plural Values What we can do to create a society and a world where we can share our values beyond cultural, ethnic and religious barriers.

Award: The winner will receive a prize of 300,000 yen. Two runner-ups will receive 100,000 yen each. Essays will be considered for publication in the International House Bulletin or Kaiho.
The essay shall be original and unpublished, in the English language (No more than 5,000 words) or in the Japanese language (No more than 12,000 characters). Essays must be postmarked on or before January 31, 2006.

The 3rd Annual Smithsonian magazine Photo Contest

The editors of Smithsonian invite you to enter the third annual Smithsonian magazine Photo Contest. We are looking for remarkable images, photographed within the past three years (since January 1, 2003), that relate to five subjects of special interest to our magazine: Americana, The Natural World, People, Travel and, our new category, Altered Images. The on-line competition is open to amateur photographers, 18 years and older.

Category winners will be awarded $500. The grand prize winner will receive a four-day, three-night Smithsonian Journeys Grand Canyon Weekend Adventure for two or the cash equivalent.
