IFAJ Agricultural Photo Star Prize

Description: The International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) invites eligible agricultural journalists to enter their photographs in a contest for the best agricultural photograph of 2005. The prize is called The IFAJ Agricultural Photo Star Prize.

Who is eligible to enter?

• Any journalist who is a member in good standing of a national association or guild that is a member of IFAJ may enter one published photograph.
• National agricultural journalist associations and guilds that are members of IFAJ may each enter up to three photos each. A national association may enter a photo taken by a journalist who is not a member of their association, however there is a fee for such entries (see Entry Fee).
• Under no circumstance may one person have more than one photograph entered in the contest.

Entry Fee

• There is no entry fee for any agricultural journalist who is a member in good standing of a national association that is a member of IFAJ.
• There is also no fee for any agricultural journalist who is not a member of a IFAJ-member national association, but who holds individual membership in IFAJ.
• Fee of 25 Euros for the entry by an IFAJ-member national association of a photo taken by a journalist who is not a member of their association or guild, nor is an IFAJ individual member.

What photographs are eligible to be entered?

To be eligible for entry, a photograph must:

• Be on an on-farm production subject.
• Photographs in this contest should enhance the editorial message of the technical copy. A photograph that was part of a photo story may also be entered, but only one photo from the photo story may be entered.
• Have been published as editorial material between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2005.
• May be either color or black & white.

All entries will be posted on the IFAJ Web site (www.ifaj.org) for public viewing both prior to and after the contest. All photojournalists entering photos agree to give IFAJ free rights to publish their photos on the IFAJ Web site, in official IFAJ publications, in IFAJ publicity about the photo contest and to display their photos during the 2006 IFAJ Congress in Norway, 12-16 August 2006.

Award:

• The prize winner will be awarded a crystal trophy and a 500 Euro cash prize.

International photo contest "An Answer for Everything"

Moscow, 11 March 2006 - International Confederation of Journalists’ Unions and Eurasia Media Center announce competition for print photo correspondents. The competition is financed by UNESCO.

The competition called “An Answer for Everything” is dedicated to social topics; professional photo journalists, news agencies and media organizations whose photos reflect reality are eligible for participation.

IDRC's Expose Urban Solutions Photo Contest

In June 2006, Canada plays host to the World Urban Forum in Vancouver, British Columbia. Participants from all over the globe will discuss solutions to the challenges facing their cities and communities. But we want to do more than just talk — we want to show delegates how people are making their cities better places to live.

What it's all about: In a word, innovation. We want you to show us the thousands of creative ways people living in cities of the South or the developed world are tackling the challenges of urban living. We are looking for the best digital photos that fit under these four themes:

• Cities Feeding People (growing food in urban and peri-urban areas);
• Liquid Gold (productive uses of water);

IADC ANNOUNCES 2006 LEGAL WRITING CONTEST

The International Association of Defense Counsel announces its 2006 Legal Writing Contest, which is open to all J.D. candidates currently enrolled in accredited law schools are eligible to submit articles. The IADC has been serving a distinguished memberhship of corporate and insurance defense attorneys since 1920.

Entrants must write on subjects in the fields of tort law, insurance law, civil procedure, evidence or other areas of the law of practical concern to lawyers engaged in the defense or management of the defense of civil litigation. The contest will be judged by a committee of the IADC.

Past experience has shown that teachers of litigation-related subjects are in an ideal position to stimulate student interest in legal writing and to encourage participation in the IADC Legal Writing Contest. These faculty members are in an excellent position to encourage their students to enter the IADC contest.

2006 Idea of America Essay Contest

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) invites all eligible high school juniors to enter the 2006 Idea of America Essay Contest, which begins today. Open to 11th-grade students and 16- and 17-year-old home-schooled students, the 2006 Idea of America Essay Contest offers a cash prize of $5,000 to the author of the winning essay. Three national finalists will each receive cash prizes of $1,000. The deadline for entries is April 19, 2006.

As part of NEH's We the People initiative, the Idea of America Essay Contest encourages students to think and write analytically about significant events and individuals in American history.

"The Idea of America Essay Contest encourages young writers to examine and analyze the defining principles of our nation," said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole. HSLDA's 2006 Poetry Contest for Homeschoolers

HSLDA is very excited to be holding our second annual poetry contest. Along with the art and essay contests, the poetry contest offers an opportunity to reward excellence. Although poetry, and especially poetic form, can seem intimidating, we encourage you to try it. In addition to the enjoyment of composition, there is the educational and cultural benefit that comes with studying poetry closely. Writing poetry also increases your appreciation as you read the great poets.

Rules for Poetry Contest

Entrant Qualifications:

• Category 1: Homeschooled students who are at least 9 but will not be 14 as of April 1, 2006.
• Category 2: Homeschooled students who are at least 14 but will not be 19 as of April 1, 2006.
• Family members of Home School Legal Defense Association employees, the Home School Foundation employees, or Patrick Henry College staff or faculty are not eligible to participate.

Format and Submission:

• Poems must be completely the work of the student entering the contest. No involvement or assistance of other parties, including but not limited to brainstorming, editing, or proof reading, is permissible.
• The poems should be typed, in at least 12 point font, and single spaced with a double space between stanzas.
• Each poem must have a title.
• Each author may enter up to five poems. Each poem requires a separate entry fee. Only one poem per page.
• The student's phone number should appear at the top of each page.
• The student's full name, date of birth, HSLDA membership number (if applicable), and contact information, including their phone number should be on a separate sheet of paper.
• Each entrant should use a separate envelope, i.e. do not send entries from members of the same family in a single envelope.

2006 CyberFair competition: Inspire and Unite!

It is an award-winning, learning program used by schools and youth organisations around the world to showcase their own local community. Students, aged 5 to 19, conduct research about their local communities and then publish their findings on the World Wide Web. Recognition is given to schools for the best projects in each of eight categories: local leaders, businesses, community organisations, historical landmarks, environment, music, art, and local specialties.

•Information seeking and use: the role of information in professional and daily lives, use of various types of information technology, and social contexts of information seeking.

There will be six winners who will be selected by a panel of judges including Duncan Omole (chair), Jonathan Levitt (Co-Chair), Yunfei Du, Yin Zhang, Nadia Caidi, Sue Johnson, Liwen Vaughan, Nathalie Leroy and J.K.Vijayakumar.

The prize for each winner is a two-year individual membership in ASIST. In the case of multiple authors, the principal author will be awarded the ASIST membership. In addition, depending on SIG III fundraising for this competition, the first place winner will be rewarded a minimum of $1,000 toward travel, conference registration, and accommodations while attending the ASIST Annual Conference in Texas, Austin, November 3-9, 2006.

Rules of the Contest:

The contest is open to all the youth around the world between the ages of 12-19.

1. The essay must be written in the English language, and consist of 500-800 words for the age group of 12-15 and 800-1000 words for the group of 16-19. The verses of the Quran will not be counted in this word count, so you can use as many verses as you like.
2. It should be about a Quranic topic. This means that the whole essay should be completely Quran based, using as many verses from the Quran as you see fit.
3. You are only allowed to submit one entry per person.
4. Please fill out all the information requested on the entry form or your entry will be disqualified.
5. The deadline for submitting your essay is July 15th, 2005, and the results will be posted God willing by July 31st 2005.
6. The essay should be written in English language to the best you can. For the English translation of the Quran, we suggest the English translation of the Quran by Dr. Rashad Khalifa, available on our web site at; http://www.submission.org/quran/ . Using other translations, however, will NOT disqualify your essay by any means.

2006 Student Essay Contest

The Indispensable Partnership?
How can the transatlantic relationship meet the global challenges of the 21st century?

The challenges facing the international community are increasingly complex and global in nature, and, thus, seem to require a collective response. Applicants should identify the primary challenges facing the world today and examine if and how the transatlantic partnership might most effectively address them.

Judges will consider whether the essay demonstrates a strong understanding of current and historical factors in the transatlantic relationship, presents a focused and well-reasoned consideration of the topic, displays originality in analysis, and exhibits clear writing.

The first-place winner will receive a $500 prize and will be flown to Washington to attend the inaugural Christopher J. Makins Lecture on May 31, 2006. Named for a past president of the Council, the lecture will feature an address by Zbigniew Brzezinski, former U.S. National Security Advisor now at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The second- place winner will receive a $250 prize. Both winners will have their work published on the Council’s website and submitted to various student journals.

WHO CAN APPLY: Currently enrolled undergraduate-level students studying in any discipline at a U.S. university are encouraged to apply. There are no nationality or citizenship restrictions.

Awards

The Marty Forscher Fellowship recognizes students and young professionals with a talent for humanistic photography. The fund will award two grants in 2004. Photographers are eligible by entering humanistic documentary images to the PDN Photo Annual in the student and/or editorial/photojournalism categories. The Fellowship is sponsored by Parsons and Photo District News.

The Canon Student Explorer of Light Scholarship Award will be presented to a student photographer who demonstrates a unique vision and ability. All students of photography are eligible for this contest. The winner will receive a scholarship award in the amount of $2,000.

The Epson Creativity Award will be presented in the personal work category for originality and creativity. The winner will receive a prize in the amount of $2,000.

The Nikon Storyteller Award will be presented to a photographer who possesses a unique, visual talent to tell stories with their photography. The winner will receive a prize in the amount of $2,000.

Actual self-promotion pieces must be submitted. Please include 2 samples of each piece and complete the entry form in duplicate.

Download the form and print out 2 copies. Tape one copy of the completed form to the back of one of the entries. Attach the duplicate to your entry so that it can be easily removed. In the case of multiple entries you must provide separate forms for each piece entered.

All information must be typed or written legibly. Entry forms must be complete to be eligible for awards.

2006 International Contest on LTPP Data Analysis

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) are co-sponsoring the International Contest on LTPP Data Analysis. 2006 Art Contest Entry Form

The aim of the contest is to provide an introduction to active artists, create interaction between artists worldwide, and offer a window to what is going on in the the world of popular and contemporary art amidst an age of automation and high tech.

The Contest is open to all mature artists International in the following categories:

• REALISM includes paintings portraying the subject as seen.
• MODERN includes all paintings from expressionism, etc to abstract.

2006 Black Hills Chapter Essay contest

Theme: "Germany/Russia/Americas...Giant Steppes Toward Freedom"

The Black Hills GRHS Chapter is encouraging students to participate in the GRHS Youth Essay Contest. The contest promotes the goals of the GRHS by encouraging young people to learn about the history of the German-Russians. Genealogy is a rapidly growing interest in our society; exposure to the study of family heritage and to the history of the German-Russians helps to stimulate a lifelong interest in family & ethnic history. Chapter winners will be announced at the June 2006 Black Hills Chapter meeting. All entries will be given honorable mention and will be forwarded to the International GRHS Youth Essay Contest. Winners of the International Contest will be announced at the 2006 GRHS Convention, which will be held in Portland OR on 12-16 July 2006.

ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to all students in public, private, parochial or home schools and accredited universities, subject to the categories below. The subject of the paper must be related to the German Russian Heritage and must be the contestant's original work; however, the student does not need to be of German Russian heritage to enter the contest. Previous contestants are encouraged to enter each year; however, resubmission of previously judged work is not permitted.

Leonard Marks Foundation Essay Contest Award

Eligibility for the award is limited to international affairs degree candidates in the 2005-2006 school year at member schools of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA);

Participants in the contest must submit an essay of no more than 1,500 words on one of nine challenges for American diplomacy in the list below- and propose a policy course to address that challenge over the next one to three years. The paper should be framed as an Action Memorandum for the Secretary of State and should emphasize realistic, practical recommendations for the Secretary's action which are within his area of responsibility.

Any major foreign policy initiative will necessarily include a Public Diplomacy dimension. Therefore, one goal of the contest is to encourage applicants and the schools they represent to think creatively about the role and uses of Public Diplomacy in promoting and implementing policy. Resources available include speeches, press briefings and releases, VIP visits, Voice of America and other US government sponsored media broadcasts; as well as longer-term activity in the cultural and educational fields, such as educational exchanges and sponsored visits of US scholars, specialists, and cultural leaders abroad and visits by foreigners to the US. Where appropriate, the paper should also address the roles of foreign governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and the Congress.

Contest entrants should follow the outline below, so that it reflects the format of an Action Memorandum as used in the State Department.

A winning entry at each participating school will be determined by that school’s faculty. All winning entries will then be forwarded to the Academy, where a committee of its members will select three overall winners; the first prize at $5,000, the second at 2,500 and a third at $1,000. The first prize-winning student will be invited to travel to Washington to defend his or her paper before a panel of Academy members.

Deadline: Participating schools should arrange timing that would permit the winning entry from that school to be forwarded to the Academy midway through the spring semester and no later than May 15th, 2006.

The Clive M. Schmitthoff Essay Competition

Any topic related to the CISG or UNIDROIT Principles or the PECL. All law schools and many business schools from time to time grant course credit for student essays on selected topics. Essays prepared in response to such assignments are eligible. Essays written by students for future publication in legal or business periodicals are also eligible.

A prize of $5,000 will be awarded for the best essay. If this essay is not published elsewhere, the Pace Institute will arrange for its publication. For all essays of special merit, the author and faculty member under whom the student studied will each receive a Certificate of Merit.

seeking short 500 word essays from individuals with a variety of backgrounds
who are willing to share their viewpoints to help open other’s minds – especially
those hearing about malaria for the first time - and to induce all readers to
‘stretch’ their mind - for the benefit of those suffering from malaria primarily. In
this open call for participation, we especially seek those who are willing to rise up
among new leaders, to take a stand, and be heard.

2006 FFRF College Essay Competition

"Why I am an Atheist or Agnostic"
"Growing Up A Freethinker" or "Rejecting Religion"

Topic: Write about growing up a freethinker (atheist or agnostic), or why you reject religion, using a personal (biographical), or philosophical approach, or describing why you choose reason over faith. Experiences in rejecting religion in a religious society may be included.

Deadline: July 1, 2006.

First Prize: Phyllis Stevenson Grams Memorial Award – $2,000

Eligibility: Currently-enrolled college students. (High-school seniors enrolling in college this fall should enter High School Essay Competition.) The contest is open only to North American students or students enrolled in North American colleges or universities at least through December 2006.

KICA Essay Contest: Japanese Culture, My View

As an event to promote greater understanding between Japanese citizens and their non-Japanese residents, Kyoto International Cultural Association will hold its annual essay contest on the views of Japanese culture and everyday life
　Those interested in Japanese culture, specialists and non-specialists alike, are welcome to write about their personal experiences in Japan or to compare Japanese culture to that of their own.
　The essay must be original and not yet published.

What's new this year?

1. The application deadline is June 30, 2006 postmarked.
2. The selection of essays will be divided into Japanese and English.
3. The six best essays will be awarded KICA Prizes (\50,000 each), and each author is expected to give a fifteen-minute oral presentation on September 24, 2006 in Kyoto.
4. E-mail submissions with attached files will also be accepted. The preferred formats are Microsoft Word, Rich Text and Text format.
